25 July 2026

This month we welcomed Pindy to demonstrate how to make the perfect Pakora, and we're sure that everyone who was there would agree that they were indeed perfect! Pindy answered all our culinary questions and has already inspired members to have a go at making their own. It was a beautiful summer’s evening, with good company and delicious treats: a perfect trio and exactly what Burnt Cakes is all about!

Nasio Trust – Changing Lives for Good

25 June 2026

Wow! June’s meeting was a hot one! We welcomed Sue from the Nasio Trust who cam and talked to us about their work to help a community in Kenya break the cycle of poverty, help educate children and women, changing their lives for good, all inspired by the discovery of an abandoned baby! Knitters amongst us will have their needles out making red cardigans and jumpers for the school, just as soon as the weather cools down a bit I’m sure!

a2dominion – supporting women escaping domestic abuse in Oxfordshire

28 May 2026

a2dominion came to the Comrades Club in May to talk to us about their work supporting women escaping domestic abuse in Oxfordshire. They provide advice, support and shelter to women and children who need it, helping them to build their lives and giving them hope. Burnt Cakes are continuing to support this group through a series of monthly collections of items which will be gathered and presented at the end of the year. The aim is to provide the women and their families with day-to-day things which will help them: the first collection is for toiletries.

This is London calling…..

23 April 2026

‘This is London calling…’ the famous catchphrase will be familiar to anyone who listens to the BBC World Service. Alastair Lack joined us in April and gave a fascinating insight into his career with the World Service which took him all over the world to interview politicians and people of power in Africa, India and the Far East. He brought home the importance of the News Service as a lifeline in countries which are under an oppressive regime or going through major change.

Nutrition for Women

26 February 2026

Nutritionist Jo Issa joined us in February for an enlightening talk about women’s nutrition for menopause and beyond. It was fascinating to find out how small changes in our diet can make big changes to our health peri and post menopause. The samples that Jo brought
along for us to try were delicious and she made sourdough seem so easy that many of us were inspired to try it… starter anyone?

A Night at the Races

29 January 2026

At our meeting in January, we were treated to ‘A Night at the Races’. Using a variety of household items such as newspaper, oven gloves, playing cards, balloons, toilet rolls and even a horse, elephant, tiger and dinosaur (toys), members were challenged to play a series of short games to win tokens. Spectators tried to guess who would win and cheered on their champions. There was a lot of laughter, and some extremely competitive natures were revealed. The evening definitely cheered up a dark damp January night.
