Corks, Spools, and Nancies: an exploration of French Knitting and its recent comeback with Sophie of A Spring Snowflake.

Thursday 24 September 2026

Explore the history of spool knitting, sometimes known as french knitting or corking; a technique of creating thin knitted tubes using a spool with a number of nails or pegs. Watch demonstrations and get your hands on a variety of handmade and commercial spools,
and cranked knitting mills, and discuss uses for the end product. The talk will end with a demonstration of a 'woolly wire word', where French knitting meets wire art with a hint of neon sign energy.

Reading Group

Tuesday 6 October 2026 · 19.30-21.30 · The Kings Arms, 39 Wallingford Street, Wantage OX12 8AU

Our Reading Group is not a traditional book club. Instead, it's a relaxed and friendly opportunity to meet each month, chat about what we've been reading, share our favourite genres, exchange recommendations and discover new authors and books. Members can also bring along books they've enjoyed and swap then with others. I do hope you will be able to join us.

Where & when we meet

The Comrades Club, 69 Newbury Street, Wantage OX12 8DJ. The fourth Thursday of every month - the bar opens at 19.30, the meeting begins at 20.00. Disabled access and ample parking. Guests are always welcome - with no obligation to join.
